NOVAK'S HOUSE LOOKED like a wreck from the outside, a collapsing pile that seemed as if it had been hammered together from salvaged driftwood. The splintered boards of the front wall were covered in moss and bird droppings, and the porch that wrapped around the property looked like it would collapse entirely with the lightest footstep, but Shep knew that inside the house was perfectly comfortable. Novak didn’t give a damn about outward appearances, but he was no spartan. Through the window Shepherd caught a glimpse of a stone fireplace, and beyond that a clean and well-equipped kitchen. Novak hunted and grew almost everything he ate, and Shepherd knew he kept his kitchen so clean it would easily pass the most stringent restaurant health inspection.

The shed, on the other hand…

Novak led them past the house to the shed, a sprawling garage-cum-workshop where he kept his truck and dressed his kills before taking the meat to the freezer. Apart from a few modern security measures the shed really was a piece of crap, a tumbledown mass of rickety boards so knotted that a child could climb through the gaps without even opening the door. Novak swung open the side door with a creak, and as he ducked into the murky darkness Shepherd followed, flinching a little as he felt the tickle of a cobweb on his forehead.

“What’s going on here, Arno?” Shepherd asked, but as soon as he spoke he heard the sound of low, steady breathing. He fell silent. In the darkness at the other end of the shed beyond Novak’s truck someone was asleep, or at least passed out.

Novak turned on a small battery powered LED lantern, casting a light that didn’t so much illuminate the shed as create a dozen eerie shadows against the walls. “Found him skulking around near the Anderson place sometime yes’day. Damned fool got himself separated from the group, and I was kind enough to lend a helping hand.”

Shepherd could see what Novak meant by ‘helping hand’ as soon as he rounded the truck and caught a look at the prisoner. It was a young Asian man in camo fatigues, maybe in his mid twenties, his arms and legs tightly bound with fencing wire to a steel chair. His nose was obviously broken, and to Shepherd’s untrained eye he had what looked to be a broken orbital bone. His right eye was swollen closed, and his cheek looked almost dented. His mouth was covered with a strip of silver duct tape.

Beyond the beating he’d taken the young man’s left trouser leg had been torn up to the knee, and around it a bandage had been wrapped around a wound that had gone uncleaned. The skin around the bandage was tacky and red with dried blood.

“You shot him?”

“Well, what do you think? Damned right I shot him,” replied Novak, as if it was the dumbest question he’d ever heard. He nodded to a box over in a dark corner of the shed. “I’ve got my shortwave.
